The Vikings were a group of Norse barbarians that first formed around 790 CE and continued raids until 1066. They originated in Sweden, and moved to take over Denmark and Norway which became known as the Viking Homelands.
The Vikings raided Sweden and Denmark (which they made their ‘homeland’) as well as Scotland, Wales, England, Ireland, Greenland, Iceland and Vinland. The Vikings also dominated Russia, giving it it’s name and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean 500 years before Columbus did. They also terrorised parts of Asia and North America.
Towns near seas or rivers would often have defences to protect against Viking Raids. The Viking were able to travel around easily due to their ‘longships’ that could sail through high seas and carry many people and supplies.
The raids occurred in order to collect valuables, food and supplies and to set up settlements in other lands. Many people from other countries had joined the Vikings after the raiders including the English, Scottish, Danish, Irish, Swedish and many others.
