
Below we have listed the most important events in the history of the Viking Era. Please remember that these are not all of the events, but the most significant ones.
789: The Vikings begun their attacks on England.
800: The Oseberg Longship was buried around this time. You can read more about this ship in the ‘Origins and Movement’ blog section.
840: Vikings settle in Dublin, Ireland.
860: Vikings attack Istanbul.
862: The Vikings found a city in Russia called Novgorod.
866: A settlement is established in York, England.
900: The Vikings raid along the Mediterranean coats, claiming new land and settlements.
911: The Viking chief Rollo is granted land by the Franks and establishes Normandy in France.
981: Viking leader Erik the Red discovers Greenland.
1000: The Vikings establish settlements in Greenland and Iceland, and Leif Eriksson, son of Erik the Red explores the coast of North America and Asia.
1010: Viking explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni attempts to create a Viking settlement in North America.
1066: William Duke of Normandy defeats the Saxon King Harold at the battle of Hastings. This is the last recorded battle that Vikings fought in, and after this they became peaceful and stopped the raids.
